SEO chases blue links. AEO becomes the answer.
Optimizes pages to rank in a list of results. The click is the goal, and the ranking is the scoreboard.
Optimizes pages to be quoted as the answer. AEOCrawler is an AEO platform — not traditional SEO. They are complementary: most AI-cited pages also rank, but AEO adds extractable answer blocks, schema and question coverage that rankings alone do not require.
You stop optimizing for a position and start optimizing for extraction. That is measurable — and it is what the nine dimensions measure.
Stop guessing whether AI will cite you.

We scored 91 top SaaS homepages. None passed.
Same 9-dimension scorer that runs on this page. The bar for being citable sits at 80 — and the top of SaaS isn't clearing it.
Real study values: average 55.5 · best page Wix 79.3 · Pipedrive 77.6 · Auth0 76.7 · Gong 74.5 · Squarespace 74.2 · aeocrawler.com 84.5 (ringed, not part of the study). The remaining points are a synthetic distribution for this layout — the study data lives in AEOCrawler, not in this file.
Nine dimensions. One number. Nothing is a black box.
When ChatGPT or Perplexity answers a question, it doesn't rank pages — it picks a source. Nine things decide whether that source is you. Each one carries a fixed share of the score, and together they add up to exactly 100%.
Direct Answer carries 20% of the AEO Score. Does the page answer the question outright? An answer engine is looking for a passage it can lift and use as it stands. If your answer is spread across three paragraphs and a table, there is nothing to lift.
Citation Potential carries 18% of the AEO Score. Would the engine name you as its source, or just read you and move on? Pages that state something specific and checkable get credited. Pages that restate what everyone already says get absorbed without a mention.
Structured Data carries 12% of the AEO Score. The machine-readable label on your page — what it is, what it costs, who wrote it. Most pages skip it entirely, which is why it is the cheapest thing on this list to fix.
Entity Clarity carries 12% of the AEO Score. Is it obvious who and what the page is talking about? An engine that cannot tell which company, product or place you mean will not risk putting your name on the answer.
Query Coverage carries 10% of the AEO Score. How many real questions this page settles. Not how often a keyword appears — how many different things a person might ask that this one page actually answers.
Semantic Coverage carries 10% of the AEO Score. Whether the page knows its subject or only circles the headline. Engines favour the page that also answers the follow-up question, because that is the one they can keep quoting.
Conciseness carries 7% of the AEO Score. How much is said per sentence. Padding pushes the useful part further down, and an engine that has to dig for the answer usually stops digging.
Readability carries 6% of the AEO Score. Whether the writing matches the reader. Text that is hard for a person to follow is also harder for a model to pull a clean quote out of.
Content Freshness carries 5% of the AEO Score. How recently the page was updated, with a date the engine can actually read. Recent pages earn measurably more citations — freshness is a signal, not a courtesy.
All nine weights add up to 100% — how much each one counts, not how well you scored.

Frequently asked questions
Short answers, quotable standalone — the way we score everyone else's.
What is an AEO score?
An AEO score is a 0–100 measure of how likely a page is to be read, extracted, and cited by AI answer engines like ChatGPT, Perplexity, and Google AI Overviews. AEOCrawler computes it across nine weighted dimensions, from direct answers and structured data to entity clarity and freshness.
Is the AEO scorer free?
Yes. The 9-dimension scorer is free to run on any URL, with no signup. You get the composite score, the per-dimension breakdown, and the weakest dimensions to fix first. Paid tiers add crawls, citation verification, monitoring, and the MCP fix-list for AI coding agents.
How does AEO scoring work?
Three steps. First, the page is fetched without JavaScript — exactly what GPTBot, ClaudeBot and PerplexityBot read, which is often not what a browser shows. Next, nine dimensions are scored 0–100 and weighted: Direct Answer, Citation Potential, Structured Data, Entity Clarity, Query Coverage, Semantic Coverage, Conciseness, Readability, and Content Freshness. Finally, the weighted sum becomes your AI Visibility score, and the weakest dimension is named first. The full weights are public in our scoring framework.
Can I fix my AEO score from Claude Code or Cursor?
Yes. AEOCrawler exposes your page's fix-list over MCP, so an AI coding agent like Claude Code or Cursor can read the prioritized issues and apply the changes in your editor while you review each diff. Score, fix, re-score — the apply loop closes when you see the lift.
What is the difference between AEO and SEO?
SEO optimizes pages to rank in search results; AEO optimizes them to be quoted as the answer by AI engines. They are complementary — most AI-cited pages also rank — but AEO adds extractable answer blocks, schema, and question coverage that rankings alone do not require.
Who is AEOCrawler for?
Writers, SEO teams and developers who publish pages they want quoted — and anyone who already ranks but never gets cited. The trade-off is worth stating plainly: if you optimise purely for rankings you can ignore most of this, and if you have no traffic at all, authority comes first. Our own study of 91 leading SaaS homepages found an average score of 55 and not one above 80 — the weakest category was the companies selling AI. Depending on your starting point, the fastest gain is usually the opening sentence, not the schema.
When should you re-score a page?
Re-score after every meaningful edit, and monthly for cornerstone pages. Content under about two months old earns measurably more AI citations, so freshness is a scored dimension. Note that a score is a measure of readiness, not a promise of citation — that limitation is why verification against the live engines is a separate step. AEOCrawler's monitoring re-scores tracked URLs automatically and shows the trend over time.
